Ottley's is THE model Caribbean inn, effortlessly evoking gracious plantation living through an incomparable combination  of historic ambiance and ultra-contemporary comfort, sophistication and West Indian warmth.

Ottley's was a favourite with Princess Margaret and it's obvious why she was so taken with it: it exudes charm. Overlooking the pool is the bar and next to that the open dining room, which at night is transformed into one of the most romantic  restaurants in the Caribbean …

While beaches are popular wedding sites, many inland resorts and plantation style inns, with their gardens and orchards, make lovely venues too. Our favourite is Ottley's Plantation Inn. One glimpse of its emerald-green lawns,  towering palm trees and tropical flowers may be enough to tempt you away from thoughts of a ceremony on the sand …

Ottley's is a delightful 25-room yellow and white colonial hotel with garden cottages. On arrival, the owner Art, gave us  a brief history of the sugar estate before we sat down to a delicious dinner of swordfish, couscous and roasted butternut squash.

The new Mango Orchard Spa is located in a dedicated tranquil cottage in the gardens of Ottley's Plantation Inn. Guests  can gaze out across the natural splendour of the rain forest, whilst indulging in a massage or body wrap on the Spa's private balcony.

Where to stay: of several upscale sugar-plantation-turned-inns, the most naturally elegant is Ottley's Plantation, with  24 rooms and six villas with private plunge pools overlooking the ocean.... . Ask manager Marty Lowell to take you on a  twilight hike to watch extended families of green vervet monkeys scamper home through the canopy after pillaging his mango  orchard. Where to eat: Ottley"s restaurant, the Royal Palm, is the most elegant on the island.

Our hotel, Ottley"s Plantation Inn, is the best and most exclusive on the island, a two-story house on the slopes of a  mountain, with views across cane fields towards the sea….Ottley's is such an oasis of old-fashioned civility, run by a  charming family from New Jersey, that one would not wish it any different…
